MAIDENHEAD Nomads Reserves have won the Roy Lester Memorial Junior Trophy this season after a 3-2 win against Datchet Village 3s at Holloways Park last Thursday.

Nomads went into the final having lost to the same team 6-1 in the league the previous Sunday, but they were primed and ready for action.

Their willingness to play hurt Datchet from the start with Deen Butt squaring the ball to George Jones who finished low and hard into the bottom corner inside 10 minutes.

However, their lead was short lived as the Villagers responded to level the scores just minutes later.

The drama continued midway through the first half as Lee Dunn was given his marching orders for a foul inside the box and the consequent penalty was dispatched to put Datchet in front.

With 70 minutes still to play and only 10 men, Maidenhead had their work cut out but it paid off in the dying seconds of the first half as a Phil Morais floated cross from the right wing nestled into the far corner of the goal.

Despite being a man down, Nomads had the drive and urgency to weather the Datchet storm and this was epitomised on 75 minutes when Alan Broadbent headed in from a Morais cross.

Paul Furnell is joint-manager of the Reserves team and he told the Observer: “I thought it was a sterling effort to be honest. We were down to 10 men for 70 minutes and went behind, so it was a real gritty performance and we found a way to win.

“We played Datchet in the league a few days earlier and lost for the first time this season, so to bounce back against the same side was quite an achievement.

“For a few years now, the club has been getting better in terms of quality of players. There is a good vibe around the place and competition for places.

"We've won promotion and a cup, and would have bitten your hand off for that at the start of the season, so we're happy.

"We could still win the league but need Datchet to lose a couple. It could happen with midweek games and you never know."
