DATCHET Golf Club heralded John Simms as its new captain at their annual Captain’s Drive In on New Year’s Day.

The event was well attended and was followed with a charity Texas Scramble competition to raise funds for the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice.

Simms said: “It’s an honour to be elected captain of a golf club that has been in existence since 1890. It makes me feel relatively young again.

“In this spirit, my vice-captain, if elected as captain next year, will be the youngest in Datchet Golf Club history.

“Ryan King is 29 and plays off a handicap of nine. He heads a contingent of young golfers at our club that will ensure it continues to flourish for many years to come.

“Having said that, we, like every club have places for new members of all abilities, age groups and genders.”

Captain-elect Richard Frewin made it three medal wins in a row at Iver Golf Club when clinching the January Medal with a score of nett 71, and for good measure he also won the two-ball prize.

Steve Loosley (75) was in second place and Satinder Sandhu (76) made up the placings.

Paul Maher is this season’s stroke play champion as he beat Sandhu one-up.

The Matchplay Pairs resulted in a win for John Campbell and Mick Stone. Sandhu had to settle for second place again with partner Harjinder Dhardwar.

Iver got the New Year under way with the Derek Smith Open which was won by Len Mayor in convincing fashion with 44 Stableford points.

Sandhu claimed second place on countback after he and Toby Slade had 37 points each. Campbell was the two-ball winner.

In the Seniors New Year Stableford, Campbell pipped John West for first place on countback, both having scored 37 points.

Loosley completed the placings with 33 points and also won the two-ball prize.
