BUS pass holders in the Royal Borough will soon be able to enjoy a helping hand when they travel thanks to a new scheme. The borough is introducing a new free companion scheme for carers on Monday, March 30. Following requests from regular bus pass users, councillors have given the thumbs-up to the scheme which will allow carers to travel free when accompanying the pass holder on bus journeys. Cllr Simon Dudley, lead member for adult and community services, said: "We have listened closely to the views of many of our bus pass users and have looked very carefully at enhancing the current scheme of bus pass allocation to reflect those concerns. "I am confident that the new scheme will not only provide an incentive for carers to travel more frequently with the elderly or disabled person but will also make journeys less stressful for bus pass holders, knowing that they have someone with them to look out for them. Existing bus pass holders - residents over the age of 60 and disabled people of all ages - will be entitled to apply for the new pass which will display a distinctive C indicating permission for a companion to travel with them free of charge. Project to honour aviation legend takes off
A PROJECT to honour Windsor's aviation legend Sir Sydney Camm has been launched with the help of big wigs from the UK aerospace industry. A reception was held in Windsor on Wednesday to mark the official launch of the Sir Sydney Camm Commemorative Society's (SSCCS) memorial projects which will see a full size replica Hawker Hurricane placed in Alexandra Gardens and a bursary scheme in the name of the great designer established for budding aeronautical engineers. In keeping with the town's historic links with aviation, the reception was held at New Lodge, which was used as a landing strip on the inaugural test flight of Britain's first ever Air Mail service in 1911 between Hendon and Windsor. During a short presentation outlining the aims of the projects, Captain John Foster, who had the experience of flying the Hawk, Hunter and Harrier emphasised the importance of inspiring the UK's potential young aeronautical engineers. He said: "If we could discover one student, just one, who had half the talent of Sir Sydney, then we would be delighted. We aim to help young people and an industry in bad need of home grown talent - it's a win-win situation." The society hopes that the £50,000 required for the Hurricane and £250,000 minimum required for the bursary can be raised relatively quickly, despite the current economic conditions. To coincide with the launch, a website outlining the projects' aims has also gone live enabling people to find out more and how to donate. Captain Foster said: "Sir Sydney's Hurricane helped define a pivotal moment in this country's history. We couldn't have won the Battle of Britain without it. It's a shame that its taken almost half a century for us to try and repay that contribution. We would ask potential donors to give generously." Details about the project and how to donate can be found on www.sirsydneycamm.org

Residents to shape borough's future
A BOROUGH-wide consultation is giving everyone the chance to help the council plan for the future. Employment, shops, education, leisure and health facilities will be covered by the new Local Development Framework (LDF) and the council is calling on residents to get involved in shaping key plans for the next 20 years. Cllr Alison Knight, lead member for planning and development, said: "The government has given us tough housing targets to meet over the next few years and the council's vehement protests against these have fallen on deaf ears. This means we face real challenges in protecting the borough's special character while trying to achieve the widest possible benefits to the people who live and work here. "The council attaches a high priority to safeguarding the Green Belt and we are even looking at new areas to include - so we need to be innovative and creative in our approach to future development. That's why it is so important for our residents to be involved in this crucial stage of planning for the borough's future." The consultation outlines three potential options for housing and employment density. The three options - for higher, moderate and lower density growth - all encourage development in towns and larger villages outside the Green Belt. Cllr Knight added: "I want to encourage people to read the consultation leaflet that is being delivered to every local home." The document is available online at www.rbwm.gov.uk/web/pp_ldf. The closing date for responses is Monday 20 April. Drop-in sessions are being held at Sunningdale Village Hall in Church Road, Sunningdale on Monday, 23 March, from 12.30pm to 5pm, the Town Hall in Maidenhead on Tuesday, 24 March, from 10am to 4pm and Windsor Guildhall in Windsor High Street on Wednesday, 25 March, from 12.30pm to 5pm.

New land train just the ticket for Windsor
A NEW land train will be launched in Windsor town centre next month. The Royal Windsor Land Train, provided by PWR Events in conjunction with the Royal Borough, will be launched on Thursday, April 2. The train will provide a much needed service for tourists, shoppers and less able visitors from the Coach Park, up to the Castle entrance and town centre shopping area. With a commentary provided by the driver and conductor, the route runs through Alexandra Gardens, along the river, up Thames Street, past the Clock Tower, round onto Thames Avenue where it stops opposite the Guildhall, just across from the Castle Entrance. It then returns to the Coach Park. The train seats up to 72 passengers in three carriages, including access for one wheelchair, and has been specially designed for use on the road. It will run at a relaxed pace enabling passengers to take in the town as they travel, but is capable of keeping pace with the town centre traffic. The journey will take approximately 15 minutes each way. The train will run throughout the year in all weathers, with open sides for sunny summer days, and closed sides for windy and rainy days. Tickets cost £2 per person one-way (under 3's free of charge) payable prior to boarding. For more information visit www.royalwindsorlandtrain.com
