COUNCIL chiefs could turn full circle as discussions begin to bring back a controversial roundabout.
The Royal Borough bowed to a request by LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games) to remove the mini-roundabout at the junction of Mill Lane, Parsonage Lane and Maidenhead Road in Clewer, in April.
Councillor Phill Bicknell, Royal Borough cabinet member for highways, supported the removal at the time and said he did not believe it would make a comeback, but at a Highways, Transport and Environment Overview and Scrutiny Panel meeting on Monday, Cllr John Fido requested officers re-examine the options.
Speaking to The Observer, Cllr Fido said: "The community in Clewer wants the roundabout to return and the panel was supportive of asking the officers to consider putting it back in after the Olympics have finished. That junction is not safe without the roundabout slowing traffic down and it was originally put in place to help residents get out of their homes in the morning.
"LOCOG have said they would pay for the roundabout to be put back in after the Games if requested by the council, but I do not believe they would pay for an alternative."
Cllr Bicknell said in April the roundabout would not return because it narrowed the road too much and held up traffic.
However, despite not attending the meeting, he said this week he would not rule out bringing it back and would bow to the opinions of the Clewer North ward's three councillors.
He said: "I know that councillor Cynthia Endacott wants to get through the Olympics and then discuss what is best for the residents in Clewer.
"It is obviously something that needs to be discussed and we will do what is best for the residents."
