Slight rise in unemployment figures

THERE has been a slight rise in the number of people unemployed in Slough, according to figures released by the National Office for Statistics.
National figures rose by a further 48,000 to leave 2.67m people unemployed in Britain, in the three months leading up to December 2011.
The number of people claiming jobseeker's allowance in Slough increased by 34 from 3,354 in November to 3,388 on January 12 this year.
However, the percentage of those signing on stayed at 3.8% of the overall working population.
The figures for Windsor and Maidenhead made for similar reading with a 0.1% increase in the number of people claiming jobseeker's allowance.
There are 106 more people unemployed in the Royal Borough, taking the figure to 1,889 at the start of this year.
Unemployment across the South East region has also remained high with 278,000 people claiming jobseeker's allowance.
Len McCluskey, general secretary of the union Unite, said: "How bad do things have to get before this government wakes up to the human tragedy it is creating?
"Rather than a headlong dash to austerity the government needs a 'plan B' for jobs and growth.
"It's a tragedy that rising unemployment is now a familiar feature of life in Britain under the Tory-led government.
"George Osborne is rapidly creating a lost generation of young people with no job prospects."
