Angels to keep revellers safe

VULNERABLE people on the streets in Windsor Town Centre late at night will receive support from good samaritans.
The scheme, Windsor Street Angels, launches on Friday at the Baptist Church, in Victoria Street, and will see 'angels' wearing blue reflective jackets, aged over 18, patrolling the streets between 10pm-3am on Friday or Saturday nights.
Windsor Churches Together has teamed up with Thames Valley Police and the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead and all the 'angels' have received full training on conflict management, basic first aid and drugs and alcohol awareness.
Minister Mark Richardson said: "As part of Churches Together in Windsor I am very supportive of the Street Angels project. It is a new and exciting opportunity to make the town centre a safer and more welcoming place for local families and tourists."
Police Communiy Support Officer David Bullock, who set-up the initiative, said: "It is a hugely rewarding role where a volunteer can make a real difference to the community in which they live, building trust and confidence as well as making Windsor a safer place.
"The project would never have got off the ground without the enthusiasm, commitment and hard work put in by the project co-ordinator, Richard Burt from the Baptists' church."
Windsor Street Angels has been in the making for around six months and follows in the footsteps of a successful Slough initiative launched shortly before Christmas.
The 'angels' will be on hand to offer pastoral care to people who find themselves in trouble while enjoying a night out. Being there to listen, care, offer practical help or refer them to a specialist agency.
