Antenna may add £5,000 a year to church

RAISING money to swell the church coffers has taken a technical turn with the proposed installation of a telecoms antenna.
The Parish Church of St John the Baptist, in High Street, Windsor, has been given the nod from the Church of England to proceed with plans to team up with Waldon Telecom to install an aerial, but the church is now waiting for confirmation from the council's planning officers.
If successful the deal could bring up to £5,000 a year into the church, which in the last year has been trying to raise more than £50,000 to refurbish the church tower.
The Rev Ainsley Swift is fully supportive of the antenna, which would not be visible, and dismissed concerns that it could have an adverse affect on people's health.
He said: "We have had our own personal consultation by dropping leaflets and talking to local people and have not had any objections. In fact, people have wished us luck with the project.
"It will mean even better coverage in the town for people on O2 and Vodafone!"
The Church Tower Appeal is ongoing and the initial £50,000 target has almost been met.
A further £16,000 is needed, though, to pay back the money used for the original survey of the tower.
