A CHANGE in the licensing rules could lead to more controls over sexual entertainment venues.

On Tuesday members of the Royal Borough's Licensing Panel will consider changing how it designates places that allow lap dancing, pole dancing and striptease.

New legislation means that if the council wants to, it can recategorise those properties in the same section as sex shops and cinemas, which have much stricter regulations and more expensive licences.

An officers' report stated: "If members pass such a resolution then there will be more control over the number of lap dancing or similar venues in the area because it will be possible to refuse applications on wider grounds than is permitted under the Licensing Act 2003 and it will give local people a greater say about whether such licenses should be issued."

As well as having more grounds for objecting to new venues, existing venues will need to be licensed under the new legislation and pay up to £10,000 for a one year licence.
