THE sale of cheap booze in pubs and clubs is being blamed for a big rise in violent crime.
Assaults in Windsor and Maidenhead have risen by more than 20 per cent in the past year and the town's top police officer Superintendent Tim De Meyer is laying the blame on 'irresponsible drink promotions'.
This year 473 people were victims of less serious injury assaults compared to 386 last year. These include incidents such as Actual Bodily Harm and racially motivated attacks.
Supt De Meyer said this week: "It's a fair comment to say that much of the violent crime committed is drink related. There was a big rise in April and May of this year and that was due to some irresponsible drink promotions in both town centres."
