ROAD maintenance and improved public transport have been highlighted as two of this year's success stories by Royal Borough transport chiefs.

But Windsor and Maidenhead council still face challenges in tackling peak hour congestion and reducing the number of road casualties.

The Local Transport Plan annual progress report was presented to members of the borough's planning and environment scrutiny panel on Tuesday (November 10).

Councillors were told that 22.4 miles of main roads were resurfaced in the borough in 2008/09 with £1.37 million being spent overall on maintenance.

Other reported achievements were the successful re-tendering of the Maidenhead bus network, the replacement of 645 street lights with modern, low energy units and works to reduce congestion in Maidenhead High Street.

The authority also secured £10 million for the Windsor and Eton Relief Road maintenance scheme and the Windsor Transport and Parking Scheme at Windsor Race Course.

Further challenges the borough faces are increasing walking and cycling, reducing traffic emissions and preparing for the 2012 Olympic games.

The panel approved the report which is used by the government to monitor how local authorities are performing.
