A SOLDIER from Windsor punched a labourer to death after trouble flared outside a nightclub, a court heard this week.

Daniel Gooda, 26, attacked father-of-two Timothy Moore from behind and punched him to the ground, it was alleged.

Prosecutor John Farmer told Norwich Crown Court that Gooda "punched and punched and punched", and Mr Moore died six days later without recovering consciousness.

Jurors were told that 30-year-old Mr Moore was knocked unconscious within seconds after head-butting one of Gooda's Army friends outside the Sing Sing bar in Norwich in March. The incident had been captured on CCTV and jurors were shown footage.

Mr Farmer said Gooda had also kicked a police officer after being arrested.

He said: "Even though (Mr Moore) does commit an act of violence in striking or seeking to strike the other man. Just because you observe someone doing that, that does not permit you to join in and punch and punch and punch as (Gooda) did."

Gooda told police that he been enjoying a night out in Norwich and had "acted immediately and instinctively" to protect his friend Jason Brookes, also a soldier, jurors heard.

Gooda said: "I did this by throwing a punch. I believe I acted reasonably in the circumstances. I didn't wish to cause Mr Moore harm."

Gooda denies manslaughter, affray and assault. The hearing continues.
