Cameron backs Windsor Firestation campaign

DAVID Cameron, the Tory leader most likely to take over as Prime Minister, has backed the campaign to save 24-hour cover at Windsor Fire station.

Mr Cameron paid firefighters at the St Mark's Road fire station a visit yesterday (Tuesday) before he attended a state dinner with the Indian president at Windsor Castle.

After a tour of the station, he listened to firefighter's concerns about the Royal Berkshire Fire Authority's plans to close the station overnight and provide cover from Slough.

Mr Cameron said: "I wanted to take this opportunity to meet with the firefighters and listen to their concerns.

"This is a very important campaign, what they are trying to do is make sure the fire station is kept open at night. A number of years ago, there was a very high profile fire at Windsor Castle which highlights just how important this is."

The tory, who was joined by Conservative MP for Windsor Adam Afriyie, said the Sustainable Communities Act could help the council to take control of the fire station.

He said: "The Act is a good way for the council to keep its services. It is not for the home secretary to decided who has what, it is for the local council. With the Sustainable Communities Act we should be able to save the 24 hour cover for the people of Windsor."
