FIVE teenagers arrested after a fight broke out at the launch of the Windsor Wheel have been released on police bail.

The men, aged between 16 and 18, were arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on Tuesday.

Councillors stepped in to help a 16-year-old who was being assaulted by a group of youths at the event on Monday in Alexandra Gardens at around 7.30pm.

While doing so, Cllr Liam Maxwell was knocked to the ground and kicked, and his wife sustained a cut finger. George Bathurst, a member of the Windsor Conservatives, had his glasses knocked off and broken.

The boy, who had been assaulted, sustained minor injuries including swelling to the back of the head and red marks on his face.

Two of the five teenagers arrested, have been released on police bail until Monday 20 April, with the remaining three answering bail the following day (21/4).

Ch Supt David Lewis, Commander of Berkshire East Basic Command Unit, said: "I can well imagine that the situation was frightening for those involved and I know that my officers are providing a lot of support. The incident received a prompt and positive response, with officers arriving at the scene within eight minutes of being called. Since then there has been a thorough and professional investigation which resulted in the arrest of five people. We will continue to provide the highest levels of service and care to the victims of this offence."

Anyone with information about the incident, who has not yet come forward, should contact Sgt Sarah Grahame, the Windsor town centre sergeant, on 0845 8505505.
