PLANS for a hydro-plant due to supply Windsor Castle have been put on hold after a power company announced it is pulling out.

Npower, which was working with the Environment Agency to develop the planned plant at Romney Weir in Windsor, said it had faced ‘significant challenges' in making the project a viable asset.

The £1m scheme, which was given planning permission in August, would have supplied one-third of the electricity at Windsor Castle.

Simon Holt, Head of Implementation at Npower renewables said: "Despite coming to this disappointing conclusion at Romney Weir; as a pioneering renewable energy company, npower renewables remains

committed to developing and operating hydro plants to produce environmentally-friendly electricity."

"The EA has a wider remit to develop schemes such as the hydro plant at Romney Weir, and we have been discussing the most appropriate way forward for them and other parties interested in

progressing this opportunity."

The scheme was first proposed in 2003 and construction had been due to start this year.

A spokeswoman for the Enviroment Agency said: "We are disappointed that Npower will no longer continue the development of Romney Weir. However, we are committed to piloting the development of a hydropower scheme and there is now an opportunity for another developer to take the scheme forward."
