THE ROYAL Borough have approved a traffic order which is hoped to provide better access to Eton High Street for shoppers and people working in the town.

Double and single yellow lines will be painted on Slough Road and Eton Wick Road in a bid to deter commuters from blocking up the roads into Eton by parking their cars before travelling into work by train.

The new traffic order, which is expected to be put into place by the end of March, is likely to be welcomed by residents who have often complained about out-of-town commuters obstructing traffic and making it difficult for parents to pick their children up from Eton Porney School.

Cllr Colin Rayner, lead member for highways and streetcare, said: "The congestion caused by commuters using these roads as a free day-long car park is creating a problem for visitors to the town and increasing the risk of an accident involving a pedestrian. We would urge commuters to make use of the many available car parks."

Following a consultation with concerned parties, including Eton Town Council, Eton traders and Eton College, the Royal Borough has decided to introduce double yellow lines along both sides of Slough Road and on Eton Wick Road from Walpole House to the Windsor and Eton Relief Road bridge.

Cllr Liam Maxwell, councillor for Eton and Castle Ward, added: "These new measures should be a boost for local businesses as it will make it easier for shoppers and tourists to reach the town - good news for High Street traders in these difficult economic times."
