CAMPAIGNERS in Windsor are up in arms against a proposed multi-million pound development on Alma Road.

A recent two-day exhibition detailing the plans for the project named ‘Windsor One' was attended by nearly 200 residents at the site at 67 Alma Road.

But proposals to construct the large-scale complex, complete with flats, office space and a SkyBar, on what is a largely residential street has now hit a snag in the form angry Windsor homeowners.

Roger Cullingham, editor of the Royal Windsor website, said: "An ever-increasing number of Windsor residents are joining forces to oppose these plans because the existing offices at 47,000 sq. ft are as large as is acceptable for this predominantly residential part of the town. The developers are threatening to increase this fourfold."

Objections to the development have also arisen in connection with the plans by developers St Congar Properties to create a cafe, restaurant and shopping facilities inside the complex.

Mr Cullingham, continued: "We are confident that existing businesses will be up in arms against these plans as it will threaten their revenues and livelihoods. The proposals are still in the initial stages, we have a very substantial fighting fund and are extremely well placed with the right expertise to give them a jolly hard time."

Meanwhile, exhibition organisers Green Issues, who will carry out negotiations with the Royal Borough next month on behalf of St Congar, have hit back at campaign leaders.

Richard Royal, senior account manager for Green Issues, explained: "It is a deliberate misrepresentation to assert that all locals are opposed to the proposals. At the exhibition we had a good mix of views including very positive and constructive responses.

"Often supporters are drowned out by a minority of vociferous opponents and it is important to consider all views and to treat them equally."
