A much loved gift shop that has been part of the Windsor Royal Shopping centre for 15 years has closed.

The shop Simply Windsor Gifts was the brainchild of Ann Shepherd, of Illingworth, St Leonard's Hill. Its range of teddy bears and soft toys made it first stop for children and many adults.

Mrs Shepherd, 68, had spent years living abroad because of her husband's job with Shell and was working as a secretary when she decided she wanted a change.

She said: "I was walking past the Toko jewellery shop just after Windsor Royal Shopping opened and just went in and got a job."

After being manager there for five years she took the plunge and opened Simply Windsor Gifts.

The decision to close came after her husband Anthony, 75 was taken ill while they were holidaying in Spain.

She said: "We went for two weeks and stayed seven and a half. Their health system out there is wonderful and I'm grateful.

"But now it is time to spend more time with my family."

She said the shop's last day on New Year's Eve was 'really sad'.

"People have been wonderful. I know everybody at the centre and they know me."

Among those who came to wish her well were two of her four grandchildren Lexie, eight and Charlie, 10 - as well as friend Sandra Williams who worked with her for 10 years and now runs Smithsilver nearby. Many customers also came along to say goodbye.

Mrs Shepherd plans to continue her business online for a year.
