AN OLYMPIC rower who struck gold at the fourth attempt this summer has added another accolade to her collection with an award from an "incredible charity".

Katherine Grainger, who won the double sculls at London 2012 with partner Anna Watkins, was at Sue Ryder's Nettlebed hospice on Tuesday last week to pick up her Sports Woman Of The Year award.

Grainger, from Maidenhead, said: "Sue Ryder is an incredible charity and I felt that everyone related to Sue Ryder should get an award, not me!

"It was very humbling to get an award from a charity that does so much to help other people."

Palliative care charity Sue Ryder hold annual awards to celebrate the success of women across areas such as business, sport and creativity.

The award comes in the same week the rower was nominated for this year's fiercely competitive BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Grainger - whose gold at London 2012 came after silvers at Sydney, Athens and Beijing - has been receiving significant support to win the coveted title.

Fellow nominee Sir Chris Hoy has backed the 37-year-old to win, while her rowing partner Anna Watkins has launched a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #katherineforspoty.
