A SURPRISED guest at a garden party for Her Majesty The Queen has spoken about her unexpected invitation.
Ruth Moulden, from Cippenham, joined 4,000 guests at The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Garden Party after applying online in a public ballot.
The 27-year-old, who attended the party to mark 60 years of The Queen's reign with her boyfriend Ben Cross, 25, said: "I applied in the ballot then thought nothing of it, so it was a nice surprise when I received the invitation last month!"
The Three Counties Garden Party, organised by the Lords Lieutenant of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire - who act as representatives to The Queen - was held at Greenlands, Henley Business School, on Monday.
The 1,000 winners of the public ballot joined guests including Sir Terry Wogan, who lives in Taplow, Slough MP Fiona Mactaggart, Windsor Festival director Martin Denny, Observer Editor-In-Chief Sally Stevens and Berkshire Media Group managing director Amanda Gee, both from Windsor.
Armed Forces representatives, Paralympians, winners of The Queen's Award and representatives of the Thames Valley Community Foundations also attended.
Miss Moulden added: "It was lovely, I had a good view of the pageant and got quite close to The Queen so it was really exciting!"
The garden party commenced with a 30-craft river pageant depicting the history of the Thames.
The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh arrived on 130-year-old steam boat, Alaska, before joining guests to watch the pageant.
There was a flypast of RAF helicopters from RAF Benson and The Queen cut a cake and unveiled a plaque to commemorate the occasion.
Mayor of the Royal Borough, councillor Colin Rayner, attended the event with his wife Samantha. He said the highlight was being recognised by The Duke of Edinburgh, who he met in April.
He added: "It was a glorious sunny day and one of the first Diamond Jubilee celebrations we haven't ended up getting rained on!"
