WORK on 448 new homes on the Badnells Pit site in Blackamoor Lane is due to begin after getting the go-ahead from Government.
The Secretary of State for communities and local government, Eric Pickles, announced this week the decision taken by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to scrap plans for a 'flood escape bridge' would not be called in.
The original plans featured a bridge across Town Moor but public outcry forced the Royal Borough to rethink. The borough felt the bridge would be "detrimental to the visual amenity and openness of Town Moor".
Cllr Christine Bateson, cabinet member for planning and partnerships, said: "This is really good news for local residents who really did not want to see such intrusive structures blighting the open and uncluttered nature of their popular local open space."
The developers, Shanly Homes, will instead provide £150,000 in Section 106 payments to improve York Stream and fund a flood evacuation plan.
