Food and heat for grant for vulnerable adults

VULNERABLE residents struggling to eat and heat their homes are set to benefit from a £54,000 Government grant.
The Royal Borough has secured funding from the Department of Health with the money being put towards electric blanket testing and replacement with Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, working with Open Kitchen's Foodshare project and thermometers to help monitor internal room temperatures.
A training and networking event is also planned for organisations which work with vulnerable residents and families.
Councillor Phill Bicknell, cabinet member with responsibility for environmental health, said: "During this period of exceptionally cold weather it is vital that we look out for our more vulnerable residents.
"It is shocking in this day and age that families and older people have to make decisions about whether to 'eat or heat'."
Councillor Simon Dudley, cabinet member with responsibility for adult and community services, said: "Simple practical things like providing appropriate slippers can not only keep the person warm, but can also help prevent them tripping and falling - which could make them more vulnerable and have a detrimental effect on their quality of life."
