Massive waste savings for Royal Borough

A NEW 25-year waste contract is set to save the Royal Borough £1.5m a year.
The Royal Borough has agreed a deal with Covanta Energy to treat all its waste and reduce the volume taken to landfill sites, saving more than £400,000 a year in tax.
Green and organic waste will be treated by Covanta's partner, Agrivert, in Oxfordshire, where it will be 'digested' to produce energy and compost.
The deal also includes the use of the proposed Rookery South Resource Recovery Facility, in Bedforshidre, which will produce electricity to be sold to the National Grid.
Cllr Phill Bicknell, cabinet member for highways, transport and environment, said: "Waste disposal is one of the borough's biggest bills and our approach to the contract negotiations was to nail down prices so that local council taxpayers will see tangible, financial benefits over the next 25 years."
The full £1.5m savings are expected to be made annually from 2016.
