A NIGHT with the stars and planets was enjoyed by more than 250 Royal Borough residents on Saturday.

The evening, inspired by the BBC's Stargazing Live series, hosted by Professor Brian Cox and Dara O'Briain, was organised by the Maidenhead Astronomical Society.

And, despite the cloudy weather, Jupiter and its famous moons, Mars, a host of constellations and even some shooting stars were spotted.

The Mayor of the Royal Borough, Cllr Asghar Majeed, attended the celestial celebrations at Braywick Nature Centre, which included a talk by society member, Jim House, hands-on exhibits and demonstrations featuring photos of the planets and stars taken in members' back gardens.

Susan Flinders, chairman of the society, said: "We had amazing feedback and have already been asked when they can come along to our next public viewing evening.

"Attendees were from a very wide age range and it's inspiring to see so many families, some with very young children, taking a real interest in the night sky."
