People power sparks U-turn
IMPASSIONED campaigners have scored a victory after fire chiefs were forced into a U-turn to retain a full-size fire engine in Windsor.
Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service has announced it is going back to the negotiating table to work on an action plan for 'a larger appliance that will meet all requirements'.
The move comes after a public backlash over proposals to keep 24-hour fire cover in Windsor with a smaller 'local fire engine' manned by just three firefighters overnight.
Assistant chief fire officer Paul Southern said: "We know that 24-hour cover is important to the residents of Windsor, which is why the proposals for the smaller appliance were first put forward.
"The consultation responses showed that people wanted a larger appliance. This must not mean a budget change that would impact on services in the rest of the county, so we are working on an action plan for a larger appliance that will meet all requirements."
