TELEVISION chef and Windsor restaurateur, Anthony Worrall Thompson, has caused a stir after being caught onion-handed at a Tesco in Henley.
The 60-year-old Ready Steady Cook star, and owner of the Windsor Larder and Windsor Grill, is reported to have taken small items from the store on five separate occasions over the course of 16 days, including three onions, bread, cheese and a newspaper.
He was caught on Friday, when security staff became suspicious as they watched him use a self-checkout till. They stopped him and subsequently phoned the police who gave Mr Thompson a caution.
Mr Thompson, whose restaurant business have been hit by the recession, said in a statement on his website: "I am so sorry for all my recent stupid and irresponsible actions. I am of course devastated for my family and friends, whom I've let down and will seek the treatment that is clearly needed.
"I am not the first, and I certainly won't be the last person to do something without rhyme or reason - what went through my head, only time will tell.
"Of course, I must also apologise sincerely to Tesco, with whom I've had a long and genuine working relationship, and to all the staff at the Henley branch, many of whom I've got to know over the years.
"Once again, I am so sorry and hopefully in the future I can make amends."
