THE controversial plans to build 13 homes on the site of the historic Rafts Boathouses were approved by the Royal Borough's urban development control panel on Wednesday.

The River House, built in 1899, will remain but Winters, Tin Shed and Pilkington Boathouse, which currently sit on the river front, will be demolished in the joint scheme proposed by Eton College and Bewley Homes.

Brocas Residents Group (BRG) have campaigned against the plans for more than a year and successfully opposed an application in June last year for 16 homes which included demolishing the River House.

Anthony Allison, spokesman for BRG, said: "English Heritage made a specific point that while they can't list the buildings, they hoped they wouldn't be demolished.

"I'm disappointed the council has ignored such expert advice."
