THE Queen and clergy at St George's Chapel, in Windsor Castle, have paid tribute to the Right Reverend Michael Mann KCVO, who died on New Year's Eve, aged 87.
Reverend Mann, who was made Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1989, served as Dean of Windsor from 1976-1989 and engaged in a number of intimate tasks for the Royal Family.
Chapter Clerk for the College of St George, Charlotte Manley OBE, said: "All at St George's were greatly saddened to hear of the death of the Right Reverend Michael Mann."
Buckingham Palace said because Reverend Mann was known personally to The Queen, she would be sending a private message to his family to offer her condolences.
Reverend Mann, born on May 25, 1924, was in the King's Dragon Guards during World War Two and served in North Africa, Italy and the Middle East.
He also spent time in Nigeria and worked in two parishes in Devon before coming to Windsor in 1976.
Due to his close relationship with Prince Phillip, Reverend Mann, in 1984, published A Windsor Correspondence, detailing a series of letters sent and received from the Duke of Edinburgh.
In 1988 Reverend Mann was asked to carry out the re-burial of the Duke of Edinburgh's mother, Princess Andrew of Greece, in Jerusalem. She was previously buried in the Royal Crypt in St Geroge's Chapel, after she died in 1969.
Reverend Mann leaves behind one daughter.
His first wife, Jill Jacques, died in 1990 and Elizabeth Pepys, his second wife, died in 2009.
