RAIN poured into a Windsor school causing damage to the dinning room after lead was stolen from the roof.

Brigidine School in Kings Road has become the latest victim of lead thieves operating in the Royal Borough. Around five metres of metal was stolen from the school roof at the end of last week.

Headteacher Elizabeth Robinson said: “We had rain coming through the ceiling and when the caretaker investigated he saw some of the lead had been ripped away damaging the roof. If it hadn’t start raining we wouldn’t have been aware of it.

“It’s a nuisance and upsetting. We feel disappointed and it is disruptive. We are lucky the school is closed because we would have had to shut the dining room.”

Builders have been called in to fix the roof in time for the new term on September 6 but the cost of the damage is still being added up.

Mrs Robinson said: “There seems to be a spate of lead thefts at the moment and as a way of protecting our school we will be adding to our CCTV network so we have cameras on the roof.”

The incident is the latest in a string of thefts across the Royal Borough with churches, community halls and schools including Charters School in Ascot being hit.

Neighbourhood watch administer for the Royal Borough, Jeffrey Pick, said: “There have been thefts at a few churches and schools. It is happening at night and they are just climbing onto the roof and rolling it up. It would make some noise so it is a bit odd nobody sees anybody doing this.

“If people could be extra vigilant and if you are aware of buildings that have lead roofs, keep an eye on it.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 08458 505505.
