RESIDENTS living under the flightpath in Slough and the Royal Borough will be subjected to more noise as works are carried out at Heathrow Airport.

For six weeks essential maintenance work will be carried out on taxiways linking the northern runway with the rest of the airfield resulting in no alternate daytime use of the runways.

This means from September when the airport is on westerly operations and planes take-off towards Windsor, people living under the departures flight path for the northern runway will not have the usual half-day break from aircraft noise. The areas affected include Colnbrook, South Slough, Windsor and Datchet.

Heathrow's director of Airside Operations, Colin Wood said: "I know this news will not be welcomed and we want to convey our apologies to all affected. We would not suspend alternation if there was any other alternative.

"This work is critical to the future safe operation of Heathrow."

Phillip Bicknell, chairman of the aviation forum, said: "We are going to have planes taking off or landing over Windsor all day with no respite.

"It is not welcome, but no one is giving us any alternative. If that is the only way we are going to have to brace ourselves for it."
