POLICE continue to investigate after a body was found at a house fire in Maidenhead.

Fire crews were called 12.38am to the blaze in Moor Lane, Maidenhead and found the two-storey semi detached house well alight when they arrived.

Most of the occupants of the house had escaped however one person, identified by neighbours as a 21-year-old women who was visiting the house, was found dead and two others were rushed to hospital, one with injuries to his legs and and women for smoke inhalation.

Thames Valley Police and Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service are inverstigating the cause and are treating it as suspicious.

Det Supt Karen Trego, leading the investigation, said: "The fire caused extensive damage to the house and has made it unstable. Until the property has been stablised and we are able to carry out a forensic examination inside, it would be inappropriate to speculate on the cause of the fire and whether it was started maliciously.

"However, I can confirm that we are treating the incident as suspicious and are appealing for anyone with any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward as soon as possible. At this stage we do not have any descriptions of suspects and are keen to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area, particularly around 12.30am."

Anyone with information should contact the Major Crime Unit at Maidenhead on 0845 8 505 505 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Formal identification of the victim is expected to take several days.
