SIR Michael Parkinson has promised a big donation towards building a children's hospice after winning libel damages.

Alexander Devine Children's Cancer Trust (ADCCT) will receive a total of £12,500 from the broadcaster, who won a case against the Daily Mail this week.

The newspaper was ordered by the High Court to pay Sir Michael £25,000 libel damages plus costs after publishing an article that claimed he lied about his family background.

Sir Michael, who lives in Bray, has said he will divide the full amount between Alexander Devine Children's Cancer Trust and a school for orphans in South Africa.

He added: "ADCCT is an enormous support to so many families in Berkshire who are going through the heartbreaking experience of caring for a dying child.

"What is more I know every penny of the money will go to where it matters."

ADCCT founder Fiona Devine said: "We are extremely grateful Sir Michael is making this donation to ADCCT. He is the founder patron of our charity and a much valued and committed supporter."
