THE grand opening of a designer outlet store in the historic Caleys site is set to be a 'royal' affair.

The Observer was given a sneak preview of the 21,000sq ft new TK Maxx store ahead of the official ribbon cutting ceremony being held on Tuesday.

Look-a-likes of the royal family including The Queen, Prince Phillip, Prince Charles and Princes William will launch the store at 9am.

The shop, which is spread over two floors, is the first to open of the three units within the development at the Grade II listed building in the High Street.

Spokeswoman for TK Maxx, Lucy Mcgonigle, said: "We have been sympathetic with the building structure and restored the original exterior features. It is very exciting to be opening a store in Windsor, we offer high quality designers at affordable prices which is something the shoppers in the town will be looking for.

"The launch is set to be a royal affair, we wanted to make it specifically local to the town and the customers."

The branch, which will be managed by Paul Gavrielides (pictured), has created 50 new jobs in the town.

It will open today and staff will be handing out 350 exclusive flags which can be exchanged for prizes up to the value of £20 on Tuesday. On the day of the official opening, customers will also be offered complimentary mini-massages and the first 500 to walk through the doors will receive exclusive TK Maxx goody bags.

Plans for a four-star hotel managed by Macdonalds Hotel group and another shop with a cafe at the site are also under-way. High Point Estates took over the site in August 2006 following Caleys closure due to falling sales - after operating in Windsor for more than 190 years.

There used to be talk of a private tunnel from the castle to Caleys, allowing HM to enter for private closed shopping sessions.

    Was this true ?
