Work for new centre is underway

BUILDING work is now underway for a new £1,3m leisure centre in Maidenhead.

The Cox Green Leisure Centre, adjacent to Cox Green School in Highfield Lane, is due to open in September.

Cllr Simon Dudley, lead member for adult and community services, said: "Despite the severe weather we have experienced, work is going according to schedule. This is an exciting stage; with the steel frame under construction you get a real feel for the size of the new building.

"The new leisure centre stems from the council's consultation with residents, community groups and site users and will offer great opportunities for local people to keep fit and healthy - right on their own doorstep."

Facilities will include a 42-station BodyZone gym, a multi-purpose dance studio, four changing rooms and accessible changing rooms for people with disabilities.

Ian Hylan, headteacher of Cox Green School, said: "As well as benefiting the local community, this centre will be a great asset for all Cox Green, Lowbrook Primary and Manor Green pupils, and will provide facilities for our new creative and media diploma course."

The centre is being built at no cost to council taxpayers as the £1.3m comes from a grant from the Football Foundation and developers' contributions.

The existing small BodyZone gym, badminton courts, climbing wall and all-weather floodlit football pitch will remain open throughout the building period. To book call 01628 777518.
