Rapist supports police campaign

A RAPIST has spoken of the consequences of the offence to help a police rape awareness campaign.

The man has recently finished a prison sentence for raping a woman while he was under the influence of drugs and police hope his experience will echo their message and the national Rape Awareness Campaign message to stay in control and enjoy a drink but keep your wits about you.

The man said drugs were like a 'permission-giver' and that prison was 'hell'.

He said: "I know I have scarred my victim for life. She will never forget what I did. She will hate me until the day she dies. Most of my family members hate me and are ashamed to call me family.

"My life at the moment is a very lonely one and it will be in the future. My future is affected by my licence and I'm on the sex offenders register. Police visits every three months. I can't go anywhere without telling anyone.

"I believe society sees me as the lowest form of person walking this planet."

Inspector Nick Deacon, leading the Thames Valley Police campaign, said: "This offender wants to let people know how a rape conviction affects the rapist; how one decision when a person is out of control can ruin their life.

"He is telling his story in the hope that it will inspire others not to lose control by taking drugs or drinking excessively and making decisions you wouldn't choose when sober. This New Year's Eve remember, no consent, means no sex."
