The Met Office have issued a warning advising commuters to avoid travelling in the snowy weather if possible and to watch out for black ice on the roads.
Drivers should take warm clothes, food, water, boots, a torch and a spade and ideally wait until roads have been gritted. They should also let someone know the route and the expected arrival time.
The Highway Code advises drivers to take care near gritters and not to overtake them.
It can take ten times longer to stop in snow or ice so experts are advising to allow extra room and to use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin. Manoeuvre gently and avoid harsh braking and acceleration. If the car starts to skid, ease off the accelerator and avoid braking unless it is necessary and pump brakes rather than trying to slam them on.
Compacted snow may turn to ice so care should be taken when walking or driving over it.
