A NEWLY formed residents group have produced a petition of more than 2,000 signatures opposing plans to move Furze Platt Senior School.

The Maidenhead North Action Group aims to protect the town's green belt land and handed 2,342 names Furze Platt councillors last week.

The protest is in response to proposals which would move the senior school, in Furze Platt Road, to Spencer's Farm, between Maidenhead and Cookham.

Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead councillor Hari Sharma, representing Furze Platt ward, said: "A huge number of my residents are extremely concerned by this proposal. There are a large number of issues that it raises, not least the building of 700 houses on the Green Belt.

"However these are not the only problems, there is the impact on services and infrastructure to the local community, an increase in the urban sprawl and the damage to the ecology to both sites. Residents do not want this scheme and I hope that their concerns are taken on board."

The plans are a joint venture between the school and private company Summerleaze, owned by Peter Prior, and the new site would include sporting and recreational facilities.

The project, which is currently under consideration by the council for the Borough Local Plan, includes building 320 houses on the new site as well as 380 new homes on the current Furze Platt School site.

The Borough Local Plan is not due to be published until summer next year and planned development for the school's sixth form will go ahead in September.
