EDL protest passes peacefully

Published: 11 Jun 2011 09:30

Demonstrators from the English Defence League marched through the town and gave speeches against a new £1m Islamic centre.

About 100 EDL members from across the south gathered at Noctors pub in Queen Street from 10.30am, drinking, singer nationalistic songs and waving banners.

Shortly after 1pm the group, led by EDL stewards, marched to King Street where march organiser Chris Jones spoke out against the town's proposed new Islamic centre.

A small inquisitive crowd collected to watch and take pictures on mobile phones, but nobody joined the protest.

At the same time a counter-protest was held out side the mosque, where around 100 Muslims and non-Muslims joined forces to peacefully speak out against the EDL.
