PLANS for a tribute to the man who rescued hundreds of children from the Nazis was given a sign of approval.

Councillors unanimously agreed that some sort of recognition needed to be awarded to Sir Nicholas Winton who helped organise an operation to rescue 669 Jewish youngsters from Czechoslovakia before the outbreak of the Second World War.

Cllr Derek Wilson had his motion backed at a full council meeting on Tuesday (September 22) to recognise the Maidenhead's resident's courage and achievement.

He said: "I feel very strongly about this, a great number of families would not be here today if it had not been for his hard work and determination. As a local resident we should pay tribute to him."
