A headteacher and his pupils have proudly recycled their school's 1,000th plastic bottle.

Riverside Primary School in Donnington Gardens, Maidenhead is among 16 schools across the Royal Borough participating in the Royal Borough's Greenredeem pilot which could see them benefit from a £50,000 fund

Recycling kiosks have been installed in the schools and pupils are being incentivised to recycle their plastic bottles. Each school will receive a 5p donation per bottle, to a maximum of 40,000 bottles per school.

On Friday headteacher at Riverside Nick Stevens and pupils Sarah Nazir, Falah Ramadhan, Abdullah Ahmed and Souradrita Bhowmik, proudly recycled the 1,000th plastic bottle to be collected in just six weeks.

Making this truly a community effort, the plastic bottles collected by litter picks organised by Maidenhead Matters have also been donated to the school. The volunteer group lead by Donna Stimson works across Maidenhead with the objective of keeping the town plastic and litter free.

Nick Stevens said, “The kiosk that Greenredeem installed has become a real focal point, and our enthusiastic team of eco-warriors are taking the lead on processing the bottles that we collect…they are keen to Greenredeem."

Donna Stimson, founding volunteer at Maidenhead Matters said, “Litter is everywhere, and it should not be. Our community and residents deserve better. Our roving litter picks take place every week, and we’d encourage members of the community to join us. Working in conjunction with Greenredeem is a real win-win."
