Firefighters were called to a blaze in a boathouse at Boulters Island, Maidenhead at 9am this morning.

They were joined by teams from Slough and Langley.

Their efforts to contain the blaze were hampered by the collapse of a corrugated tin roof but four clinker built rowing skiffs were rescued.

A fifth skiff and some equipment were destroyed. But although the boathouse was destroyed fire fighters prevented the blaze spreading to an adjoining building that contained a skipper boat worth £300,000.

It too about an hour and a half to control the blaze.

The destroyed building belonged to Peter Freebody and Company, builders and restorers of traditional boats.

The fire is not believed to be of suspicious origin.
