A THRILLING day of polo climaxed with the dropping of a million purple poppies from the sky over the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club.

The club in North Street, Winkfield, played host on Saturday, July 28 to an amazing day of polo that saw the England team beat their American opponents for the second year running to win the Westchester Cup - presented to them by the Queen's granddaughter equestrian Olympian Zara Tindall.

The day was hosted by the team's sponsors Flannels designer stores.

The dropping of the poppies marked the grand finale as it launched the Warhorse Memorial Charity's first national appeal to remember the sacrifice of horses during the First World War. A Russian built Yak-52 plane dropped the petals, while soprano Christina Johnston sang.

The extraordinary day also featured a dressage masterclass by three times Olympic gold medallist Charlotte Dujardin.

VIPs from the world of music. fashion and modelling attended. They included models Amber Le Bon, Abbey Clancy and singer songwriter Vanessa White.

The Scots Guards entertained by performing on the pitch ahead of the Westchester match.
