A former headmistress - now a great grandmother - has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Violet Smith was head at Windsor's Spital Infants School until her retirement in 1978. She lived in Windsor for more than 60 years after moving there in 1946 with her late husband Jim.

She is now one of the oldest residents at Holyport Lodge Care Home on The Green in Holyport.

She celebrated her birthday with a party attended by her three great-grandchildren and seven grandchildren - three of whom travelled from Australia to be with her.

They had created a photo album of her life, spanning her century in pictures. The album gave an idea of the changes she has seen in her lifetime, tracing the growth of her family over five generations from her parents to her great-grandchildren.

Holyport Lodge Care Home Manager, Peter Slaney, said: “It’s always great fun celebrating residents’ birthdays in the home, but we are particularly excited with this being such a huge milestone."
