A veteran police officer and his four legged partner had a royal send off today - as they undertook their last job before retirement.

Sergeant Andy Turner and his specialist search dog Toby were part of the team policing the royal wedding in Windsor.

The pair are no strangers to royal occasions, having policed the Diamond Jubilee, the Queen’s 90th birthday Windsor walkabout and several cruise liner naming ceremonies.

Sergeant Turner's career goes back slightly further than Toby's - 27 years in fact.

He said: “I am a big fan of the royal family so it is a huge honour and I have been lucky to have been there for so many of them."

"The royal wedding has been the biggest of them all.

“We have been working on this operation for five months, so for us we are simply doing the job that we have trained and prepared for.

“It is a massive team effort and I have complete faith that no matter what we are faced with we will do our very best."

As for himself and Toby he said: “It is an exciting way to end our careers.”

Toby is Sgt Turner’s fifth canine companion, having joined the force in 2013 straight from a dog pound.

Toby's high 'play drive' made him the perfect recruit for the specialist search team. He has helped Sergeant Turner find missing people and worked on major crime investigations.

Sgt Turner, who will continue to look after Toby in their retirement, added: “I love dogs, so to be able to work with them and then have him as part of our family makes it the perfect job. I have been very lucky and Toby loves the job too.

“It is an honour to work the big operations, but it is also so rewarding when we help to find vulnerable people or when we find a vital piece of evidence that helps to bring a murderer to justice – there is no other job like it.”
