Pub enthusiasts have given their ultimate accolade to the Craufurd Arms in Gringer Hill, Maidenhead.

The Slough, Windsor, and Maidenhead branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) named it Pub of the Year.

The Craufurd Arms had a narrow escape last year, following a battle with developers who wanted to buy it. But supporters in the community rallied round and bought it themselves.

The chairman of the campaign Mark Newcombe accepted his award from the CAMRA branch chairman, Steve Goodall after receiving a letter of congratulation from Prime Minister Theresa May.

Mr Newcombe said: “Mrs May and her husband will always be welcome at our pub whenever they get the opportunity.”

Meanwhile, the Conservative Social Club in York Road was named Club of the Year. Brian Dodd, who took over the club with his wife, Lorraine, two years ago, said: “We are delighted. It is a tribute to our beer.”
