The company chosen to build the Royal Borough's new £32.8m leisure centre has pledged to offer work and training to locally based people and contractors.

The new Braywick Leisure Centre will be built in Braywick Road.

It will replace the 40-year-old Magnet Leisure Centre in Maidenhead and this week Wates Construction was announced as the company chosen by the Royal Borough to take on the project.

The company has organised a Meet the Buyer event at Maidenhead Town Hall happening between 8.30am to 11.30am, as a first step towards awarding contracts to local firms which will be able to register interest and tender for contracts.

The event will begin with refreshments before hopeful companies get a chance to meet the Wates team.

The planned new centre will boast a 10-lane swimming pool, larger training and splash pools, a 200-station gym, four squash courts, a larger sports hall, improved accessibility for disabled users and sports teams and 500 car parking spaces - double the amount at the Magnet.

The Royal Borough boasts the new centre will use 70 per cent less energy than its predecessor.

It was designed by architects Burke Rickhards based on community feedback during the consultation process.

Alec Jackman, Business Unit Director for Wates Construction Southern Home Counties, said: “We will work closely with our partners to ensure that the project is a success. Integral to that success will be the input of local people and I’d like to encourage small businesses across the local area to attend our Meet the Buyer event to find how they can become part of creating this exciting addition to Maidenhead.”

Cllr Samantha Rayner, Cabinet Member for Culture and Communities at the Royal Borough, said: “Braywick Leisure Centre offers us a once in a lifetime opportunity to provide residents with a state-of-the-art hub for sport, arts and a wide range of cultural events. Once complete it will be the major destination for sport in the Royal Borough and have activities to cater for all ages.

“I look forward to seeing the project progress and we will continue to work alongside Wates and our other partners on this exciting journey.”

The new centre is expected to open at the end of 2019, with the Magnet Leisure Centre remaining open until then to ensure there is no break in service.
