Berkshire County Council launched an anti-litter campaign in 1983 at one of Slough’s least desirable locations.

Council chairman Trevor Timperley joined youngsters at Chalvey Transfer Station and sat on top of a huge pile of domestic rubbish with the children wearing ‘Keep Berkshire Tidy’ tabards.

Speaking to the Observer Cllr Timperley said: “I’d like to see more people doing something towards keeping the environment tidy and beautiful.”

Upton Lea youth club opened for business 35 years ago and got off to a good start with 20 new members. Organisers promised a warm welcome for any teenagers who found themselves at a loose end on a Sunday afternoon.

Minister in charge Rev. Mike Hill told the Observer: “We were conscious that 12-year-olds were being left rather high and dry and we hope to fill that gap-although we don’t actually have a name for the club yet.”

Langley College staged its annual hairdressing competition for full-time and day release students with over 100 models getting eye-catching 1980’s free hair styling.

The winner,17-year-old Christine Butler, scooped the first prize and described her creation to the Observer: “It was swept up from the back and coloured blonde on top with rusty bits round the side and dark at the bottom.”

So many parents and friends attended the competition that the organisers planned to hire a larger hall for the next year.

Organiser and lecturer Tricia Garrigan said: “The turn-out was tremendous-it made all the hard work worthwhile.”

Windsor’s Theatre Royal steeped into the unknown when a new production of Alan Ayckbourn’s “Taking Steps” started its first run in 1983.

A previous two Ayckbourn plays “Relatively Speaking” and “The Norman Conquests” had both returned for second runs and at a press call cast member Richard Kay said: “He is a genius,a great games man and loves working out permutations, patterns between couples.”

Wexham stock car driver David Willis saw a reverse in his fortunes when he won the British Stock Car Championship, but the prize money won’t mean he would be giving up his day job-it was a modest £75!

After making a comeback from a back injury he admitted: “I missed several races through injury and because of that I started near the back, but I took the lead on lap three and held it.”
