TRIBUTES have been paid to a man who was killed in a motorway crash after he was stopped by police.

Nathan Sedgewick, 41, of Hempson Avenue, Langley, pulled over to the hard shoulder of the M3 on Sunday, September 10, after being stopped by a marked police car.

Hampshire Police said that when he got out of the car he was struck by at least one vehicle in a running lane.

South Central Ambulance Service attended but he died en route to hospital from his injuries.

On Wednesday his family paid tribute to him, saying: "Nathan was a beloved son and brother who put a smile on everyone’s face with his quick wit and humour.

"He was extremely kind and will be sorely missed by everyone who loved and knew him."

Hampshire Constabulary referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) due to the contact Mr Sedgewicke had had with police leading up to the incident. However the IPCC confirmed to The Observer that is had since sent the case back to the force for local investigation by its professional standards department.

The incident took place between junctions 12 and 13 on the southbound carriageway before 1am.
