A PASSENGER train caught fire near Burnham train station.

The train, which was carrying 52 passengers, was moving when the rear carriage caught alight.

The fire service was called at 11pm on Wednesday evening to tackle the blaze. They remained at the scene until 3am on Thursday.

The train came to a stop roughly 500 meters from Burnham train station. The fire happened on a westbound train between London and Bristol.

The fire service was unable to extinguish the blaze with water until the overhead electrical cables were shut down.

A spokesman for the fire service said that no injuries had resulted from the fire.

He said it was believed that overheating batteries had been the cause.
