BERKSHIRE’S teenage sharp-shooter Amber Hill missed out on the chance to become Britain's first female shooting Olympic medallist.

The 18-year-old from Binfield was on target for a medal after finishing strongly in qualifying for the semi-finals of the skeet competition in Deodoro.

Sporting cool blue Union Jack nails, the Windsor-born shooter qualified from the afternoon’s early rounds to reach the shoot-off involving the leading six markswomen.

China's Meng Wei topped the qualification standings with a total of 73 from three rounds, but Hill was only three shots behind on 70.

The scores reverted to zero for the finals rounds where the teenager shot 13 of her 16 targets but was left trailing behind her rivals and was eliminated from the competition.

Hill, who is a former pupil of Claires Court School in Maidenhead,  was crowned her sport's youngest world champion at the age of 15 in 2013, and went on to win gold at the inaugural European Games in Baku last year.

She was persuaded to take up the sport at the age of 10 by her grandfather and has won the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year.
