TEA and cake was enjoyed by children from Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead at Windsor Castle on Friday to celebrate the Queen's official 90th birthday.

Schools from across the area were invited to a tea party at the castle, which was broadcast to more than 600,000 students worldwide.

Claires Court in Maidenhead, Claycots School and Montem Academy in Slough and St George's School in Windsor all took part.

Rebecca Whitlock, associate head teacher at Claycots School said: "“'It is not everyday you are offered the opportunity to have a tea party at Windsor Castle! We feel privileged to be given the chance to celebrate The Queen’s birthday in such a unique way. Our pupils were very excited to be part of the broadcast and I’m sure the memories will stay with them for a very long time.”

The broadcast was organised by Discovery Education, which encouraged schools across the world to host their own tea party to celebrate the life of the Queen.

'Happy Birthday, Your Majesty' was presented by former Blue Peter presenter Diane-Louise Jordan and The One Show's Joe Crowley. It gave pupils watching the chance to see inside the historic royal residence and learn more about the life of Britain's longest reigning monarch.

The show featured a live link-up between schools in India, Canada and the UK, and learned about Her Majesty’s special relationship with Commonwealth countries the world over.

The Choristers of St George’s Chapel performed during the programme and led the finale by singing the national anthem.

Charlotte Manley, St George's Chapel clerk said: "It's a very special event, it's a one off.

"It means a huge amount to sing for your sovereign in her home and to lead the singing, not just here, but for all the people watching, is wonderful."

A total of nine tables were laid out in the Quadrangle at the castle to represent the nine decades of the Queen's life and the guests round each table were dressed in costume from that decade.

Jemima Rellie, Director of Content and Audiences, Royal Collection Trust, said: “Her Majesty The Queen has been a role model for many generations and continues to inspire children today. All children love birthday parties, and tens of thousands visit Windsor Castle each year to find out about The Queen. We are thrilled to celebrate The Queen's birthday with schools at Her Majesty's home and indeed the home of royal history for nearly 1,000 years.”

An on-demand version of the 30 minute broadcast will be available shortly on the Discovery Education website at www.discoveryeducation.co.uk/hmq90
